Joshua Ortiz

Graphic Artist - Digital, Print, and Copy Writing

About

Hello World! My name is Joshua Ortiz; I am a Houstonian by birth, but Puerto Rican at heart. My family hails from Puerto Rico, specifically a little town called Camuy. *Do you know about our national animal, the frog named “Coquí”?* They grew and explored the world, from New York, Michigan, Florida, and much more. With the opportunity to travel at a young age, I learned many important life lessons early on. Let’s not forget to mention Houston’s amazingly diverse culture. With all of these experiences, I must say, I have developed an open mind, a friendly attitude, and hard-working hands for anything I have a passion for.

From the beginning, my greatest passion is art. Painting, drawing, sculpture, practically any medium to express, drew me in. At a very young age, both my parents would indulge my creativity. I recall having access to most methods of artistry. They provided me with notebooks full of blank pages and an almost unlimited color selection. The inside of my mind was colorful, and it bled out with my hands onto paper and much more. My passion was not halted by our society’s stigmas about art and artists. From the beginning, I did not want to end up like many artists of note, unappreciated, unsuccessful in my time, and in debt forever. Thus graphic design, a form of artistry, allowed me to pursue my passion with many mediums and make a decent living.

My art is a combination of print, digital, multimedia, and more. It’s a means to an end, a salubrious way to explore and process everything that goes on in my head. From family to friends, classmates, colleagues, adventures, traumas, successes, and festive occasions, all subjects are inspirational. I honed my craft through educational courses, which eventually lead me to pursue my BFA in Graphic Design at Sam Houston State University. It was an amazing rollercoaster of struggles, passion, and success. #igotbestinshowseniorexhibition2016.

Let us talk about goals. I have three primary life goals; becoming an art director at an art museum, opening a Puerto Rican cuisine restaurant, and designing a significant world brand. To accomplish this, I am trying to gain as much experience in the field possible. I currently hold a Senior Graphic Designer position at the agency 7 Fifths Creative, and their sister printing company, CME Printing. At this agency, I encounter a multitude of projects that require critical thinking and quick design. So many major Texas brands cross my desk, from medical to educational and even the energy industry. My favorite part of the process is ideation.

The next step to achieving my goal is updating my personal identity: a complete brand overhaul and execution of newly learned skills. With this in mind, I also want to expand my reach and audience. To accomplish this, I have decided to stream the entire process from conceptualization to execution. The graphic design industry is perceived as a very competitive and cut-throat environment. I want to show that it is much more. Like any art form, there are nuances and hurdles. Still, overall it is a field of passion un-abided or contained by societal constructs. It evolves and expands with each year. To show a full process of design will provide other individuals the opportunity to explore their own imaginations. Successful design is not something you can copy and paste. It takes skills and an inherent ability of exploration to find the best path to convey information.
